I have returned from my Society Islands holiday, but even in French Polynesia, I could not get away from thyroid controversy. The French Government Nuclear testing on atolls near Tahiti, did not cause increases in thyroid cancer according to their data. However others have doubted the government claim. The ATA has been monitoring the Marshall Islands since USA Bikini blasts and find progressive thyroid cancer incidence. How could the French not find any increase? The debate goes on.

Stick your neck out!
With a glass of water and a small hand held mirror, you can check for nodules or goiter.

1. Aim mirror at the area above the collar bone , and below your Adam's apple. That is the thyroid area.
2. Tip your head back slightly.
3. Sip the water, shallow, and watch the thyroid area.
4. Any moving bulge, that is not the midline Adam's Apple in the thyroid area, is suspect.
5. This patient test rarely works, but maybe you will be the lucky one that sees a bulge.
6. See your doctor to confirm your suspicions.
