Dr. Guttler's Newsletter

August 16, 2004

Hello to all my subscribers,

Mary Shomon and her Gang of Three
Unfortunately, More Mary Shomon News

I am sorry about this, but I will just make a few comments.

The most recent Mary Shomon pseudo-thyroid newsletter has added a third doctor proclaiming to be an expert on thyroid disease. This doctor is not an expert on thyroid disease. He joins a list of other doctors that have claimed to be thyroid experts without portfolio, who have written articles defending Mary's newsletter, and trying to undermine 50 years of thyroid research with their "opinions". The patients need to know that real research into all aspects of thyroid disease are being published in "real" medical journals everyday. Thyroid treatment is evolving as we learn more about the gland, and it's functions.

The American Thyroid Association, the Endocrine Society, and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists have 5000 members, and the vast majority are not listed as "thyroid experts" on Mary's newsletter recommendations. What does that say about her experts list? Who do you want to turn to for crucial medical advice? Mary Shomon, a thyroid patient with an agenda to sell you anything from her anecdotal books, to grapefruit therapy, proclaiming to be an advocate working in your interests, and three doctors that wrote critical articles about the present state of knowledge without a single shred of evidence. They need the exposure that they get on M.S.'s websites. All three doctors get considerable exposure from her site to sell whatever they happen to be pushing at the time.

I turned down a request to comment on the details of the last doctor's attack. I am too busy seeing thyroid patients in my center, and publishing real thyroid research papers, attending Thyroid meetings, and presenting new research with my USC / Keck School of Medicine Thyroid Group, to waste time with comments made by pseudo-thyroidologists.

To all my newsletter readers, I am sorry to waste your time with this topic, but will return with the next real thyroid newsletter in September.

Do not waste your time reading this article, but here is the URL if you must read it.
