In 2014 there were none of the above learning thyroid RFA. Only Koreans, and Europeans such as Dr.Baek in Korea and Dr.Valcavi in Italy. After traveling to Italy in 2014, I returned to the US and began to work with RFA systems and to teach thyroid RFA in my center. In 2018 I began a study to evaluate and treat thyroid nodules in my center. Except a Korean Interventional radiologist trained by Dr.Baek, I was the only other one treating in the USA.
Wow, when it was known there is money to be made in minimally invasive treatment for thyroid nodules, a rush to get a website up touting thyroid RFA treatment. ENT and surgeons saw a future with less surgery. With limited experience these websites are flooding the internet. One site by a surgeon I trained at a hospital is accepting patients when the physician had only done one case. Even RFA centers doing vein ablations added thyroid to their website.
Major universities have websites on their thyroid RFA program with interventional radiologists with expertise in ablation of livers but limited experience in ablation of thyroid nodules located in the small neck space.
Thyroid nodules, cancers and parathyroid adenoma are located in a very narrow space in the neck with many vital structures. This is not an area for large blunt, high heat electrodes used in liver work. There are many skills needed to work in the neck learned by years of practice on models and actual hands on experience with thyroid patients.
